Rutherford uważał możliwość uzyskania użytecznej energii z reakcji syntezy jądrowej za fantazję. Czy możliwe jest wykorzystanie układu wiązka-tarcza do generowania energii i jakie są implikacje dla systemu takiego jak Plasma-Focus.
