Abstract

The Wendelstein 7-X demonstrates the plasma properties essential for reactor relevant plasmas in advanced stellarators, confirming that the stellarator is a viable fusion power plant concept. The first plasma operation started in December 2015 and is continued in approximately six-month experimental campaigns(with technical breaks). The current experimental campaign began on September 15, 2026, and will continue until April 28, 2027. Since 2015, the Pulse Height Analysis (PHA) diagnostics which has been designed and installed by IPPLM, was in operation, providing wide range of spectra in soft X-ray range. However, after 10 years of the PHA operation, it was decided that an upgrade was necessary to improve its performance and expand measurement capabilities.

Starting in the middle of 2023, a comprehensive upgrade was initiated: all SDD detectors were replaced, a new main module for detectors and analyzer was designed and built, and the settings of the digital signal processor (DSP) were optimized for operation with the new detectors. In the fall of 2024, the PHA began operation as part of the OP2.2 campaign. The next stage of the PHA diagnostics modernization plan involves installing the new digital signal processor that will enable separation of overlapping pulses - rather than removing them - which will impact spectrum statistics (order of magnitude) and other important system parameters. It is also planned to improve the method of controlling the beryllium filters and slits widths. As part of the seminar, this next stage in the modernization of PHA diagnostics will be discussed. The work is performed in terms of collaboration between IPPLM and IPP Greifswald.
